Going For Growth 2011 event

On October 20th the Innovation and Sector Development Team, in conjunction with the University of Essex and Writtle College, ran an event for local businesses to help them exploit the advantages of design. The event, hosted by the South East Local Economic Partnership (LEP) vice chairman George Kieffer, brought together over 100 delegates to hear from experienced and successful business leaders, attend workshop sessions and to network.

Delegates had the opportunity to hear from some notable keynote speakers. Sir George Cox, former chairman of both the Design Council and the Institute of Directors spoke about the competitive benefits of using professional design services and how essential they are in making ones business stand out from the crowd. He was joined by Chris Robinson, Olympus KeyMed, who presented a case study on how the company had taken a market and design led approach to the development of a product, a product they had not intended to develop, which has since become a market leader.

Businesses also benefitted from workshops run throughout the day covering topics such as exporting for growth, social media marketing and branding through storytelling.

“The speakers were inspirational. From attending the day, I gained an insight as to the best way to contact big clients. The workshops provided some useful guidance and feedback on marketing and how we can continue to develop our practice and achieve our goal to be the number one legal practice in Essex”
Claire Read, Partner and Head of Probate Tax and Trust, Birkett Long.

The event is part of a programme of events and business development activities run by The Innovation & Sector Development team, part of the Enterprise Team, in partnership with a number of public and private sector partners, The event was funded by the Design Council.
